Committees and volunteer groups
Are you looking for ways to increase your expertise and influence? Whether focused on clinical practice, education or advocacy, volunteer groups offer you the opportunity to influence the practice and study of medicine, network with colleagues in your field and participate in the leadership activities of SIR and SIR Foundation.
About SIR volunteer groups
The SIR Board of Directors and the SIR Foundation Board of Directors have the authority to establish, appoint or terminate volunteer groups and give them duties and authority deemed necessary and appropriate. The boards of directors prescribe and monitor the roles and responsibilities of such groups to ensure alignment with the strategic plan. These volunteer groups include:
- Committees
- Subcommittees
- Workgroups
- Task forces
- Advisory boards
- Section governance
These are often referred to collectively as "committees."

Volunteers are at the heart of SIR’s and SIR Foundation’s work. Our 800 active volunteers contribute their time, talent and expertise to provide members with resources, education, standards of practice, clinical practice guidelines and much more. These efforts are invaluable, allowing us to accomplish incredible things for the society and the specialty.

Volunteer process
Any SIR member in good standing can apply to be appointed to an SIR and SIR Foundation committee. Per the SIR bylaws, all volunteer chairs shall have been members in good standing for a minimum of three years.
The call for volunteers opens annually in August. Applicants must submit an online application by mid-September of each year.
How do I join a volunteer group?
See the current list of SIR and SIR Foundation volunteer groups. Then apply through the SIR Connect platform.
Are there any restrictions in applying to volunteer?
Applicants must be an SIR member in good standing with an active email address that you use daily.
What are the volunteer policies?
Volunteers typically serve in a volunteer group for up to two consecutive three-year terms. Volunteers who are completing their first term and interested in continuing service are required to apply for reappointment. Members who have served six consecutive years within a volunteer group must wait one year before reapplying to the same group. SIR and SIR Foundation policy limits the number of volunteer groups in which one can participate concurrently to no more than three.
What policies guide the work of the society?
SIR is guided by a series of documents that establish the work of the society, support how our mission is achieved and ensure transparency to our members.
What type of commitment is involved?
Commitment varies based on the level of activity of each volunteer group. All volunteers are expected to participate regularly by email and through virtual and/or in-person meetings. In-person meetings are usually held during the annual meeting.
How are members selected to serve in SIR and SIR Foundation volunteer groups?
Applications must go through an approval process before selections are official. Volunteer chairs review all applications and make recommendations to the SIR Board of Directors and SIR Foundation Board of Directors for review and approval during the fall governance meetings, typically held in November.
When will I be notified regarding volunteer appointments?
- During the annual call, applicants are notified electronically in December.
- Newly appointed members are given an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the volunteer group by attending the next meeting as an invited guest.
- Terms begin and end at the annual meeting.
